Offering some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities such as elks, deer, many birds, wolves, and especially when it comes to seeing bison, North America's largest land mammal. Elk Island National Park played an important part in the conservation of the Plains bison. Founded in 1906 as an elk preserve to protect one of the last big elk herds in the region, it was the first wildlife refuge in Canada.
